Diagnostic Laboratory Evolution of Procedural Testing




A diagnostic laboratory or clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests done on human clinical specimens to get information about the health of a patient as pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.


Medical laboratories are classified as free-standing laboratory or hospital-based laboratory, also called clinical laboratory, based on its facilities, target clientele, and hospital affiliation. Clinical laboratories represent an area of healthcare neogen indonesia that has always undergone major changes because of technological advances and external economic pressures. In the recent past, many new diagnostic techniques and laboratory tests have been introduced as a result of both research on the fundamental pathogenesis of diseases and the development of new methods in themselves. In this era of high technology, health care delivery involves different disciplines and specialties. As the medical detective of the health care industry, the laboratory worker has an almost unlimited range of opportunities for employment. From manual and conventional methods of performing laboratory procedures, laboratories had grown dramatically in physical size as well as in the level of technology offered and the equipment available for efficient and accurate results.


Some of the interesting advancement in laboratory science is done in molecular biology, sometimes called "molecular diagnostics" and nanotechnology. The former usually deals with "Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)" methods by amplifying DNA segments and the latter about manipulation of atoms and molecules. As these technologies become more and more popular, some of the laboratory tests are being phase out especially in the field of microbiology as some methods thermogravimetric analyzer tga are replaced by PCR techniques. Because of this, less staff are needed to operate a laboratory and let the machines do the rest of the work. It was initially considered that automation and the advent of robots, as well as issue point of-care testing (POCT), would put many health lab employees out of a job, but the opposite is true. More sophisticated and more highly taught and educated practitioners in the medical lab are needed to perform these highly skilled procedures, which in numerous cases need some understanding and critical conceiving in their performance. All of these innovations present the impact and importance of laboratory medicine that it can only be achieved by adding value to laboratory tests, represented by their effectiveness in influencing the management of patients and related clinical outcomes.
